Mohawk Place first opened its doors in Buffalo, New York in 1990 after being renovated by Pete Perrone. The Mohawk Place in Buffalo, New York had been vacated for quite some time before that but Pete Perrone was still able to preserve much of the interior to closely mirror what it looked like almost a hundred years earlier, when it was a turn-of-the-century gin mill.
By the early 1990s, Mohawk Place Buffalo began its history by hosting shows on its tiny stage. Many local and national blues performers began to play at Mohawk Place, gaining a lot of notoriety throughout the years. By 1995, Mohawk Place started to bring in underground acts from all over the country as well as original local bands and a younger crowd began to rub elbows with the bikers that frequented the bar. In 2002, Mohawk Place Buffalo decided to expand it's size to a 300-person-capacity venue. The back rooms, kitchen and the bathrooms were taken out to build a larger room with a much bigger Mohawk stage. Although the larger Mohawk Place stage was used the majority of the time, the smaller Mohawk Place stage remained for the more intimate shows.
