In 2005, Mike Newton became a redshirted freshman on the University of Buffalo Bulls football roster. In 2006, Mike Newton played in 12 games during the Buffalo Bulls football season. Mike Newton led the Buffalo Bulls football players and tied for the conference lead in interceptions with five. Mike Newton also made 60 tackles during the Buffalo Bulls football season. Mike Newton was named MAC East Division Player of the Week for his efforts agaist the Golden Flashes at the University of Buffalo Stadium.
