Tom Drewes attended Dunmore High School in Pennsylvania. During his high school career, Tom Drewes led his football team in tackles and was also a catcher on the baseball team. Like teammate Ray Norell, Tom Drewes spent his senior year at Milford Academy and was considered among the Top 50 prep school recruits by Rivals.com

After graduating from high school in 2006, Tom Drewes joined the Buffalo Bulls roster that fall. As a true freshman, Tom Drewes played in 9 games with 1 start. He recorded 11 tackles over the course of the season.
